Holy Spirit & the baking aisle

Howdy!

So, one of my hobbies in isolation has been cooking and baking. I’ve been trying out new recipes, and even ventured to make fried pickles! It’s been both fun and challenging because a few of the recipes didn’t work….the perfectionist in me was quite agitated!

But nevertheless, I decided that since Easter is coming up, I would make a few traditional German cakes to celebrate čÖé

With my newfound baking zeal, I zipped over to the store to grab some flour, quickly realizing that everyone else and their dog had the same idea: the shelves in the baking aisle were bare! My first reaction was grim. I imagined myself walking out, empty handed with all my baking dreams crushed… when all of a sudden, I spotted on the bottom row the LAST bag of Robin Hood flour. I didn’t care that it was 10 kilos too much. I didn’t care that I could hardly pick the thing up and hurl it over the side of my cart… I just saw my baking dreams coming true! It was a sweet , sweet moment.

But then it happened AGAIN today. I went to grab a few last ingredients, and while taking a stroll down the baking aisle (in a new store this time) I found myself staring at nothing but empty shelves. Like what the heck people?! Isolation brings out many hobby bakers I guess? I was pacing up and down the aisle searching for icing sugar. It wasn’t looking good. I mean, everything was stripped clean. A bit like what piranhas do to their prey. It wasn’t until I decided to crouch down a little, crane my neck, and peer into the abyss of the middle shelf area, when sure enough, what do I find, but the LAST bag of icing sugar.

Then it hit me. This was a Holy Spirit moment. He saved it for me. I felt that way with the flour, but I knew it with the icing sugar! He knew that I needed this little blessing, wink from the heavens, reminder that I am loved. It sounds so simple, but that’s the beauty of it. Sometimes the Holy Spirit can speak to our hearts with the smallest of things.

So, what are the winks that you are receiving from God!? They might be something small or something great! Perhaps you haven’t felt them… so I invite you to ask Him to send you a wink. Ask Him to show you His love- especially in these trying times. God isn’t hiding, and He surely wants to remind you, that you are His beloved.

God bless you!

letting go: the sweet life.

“None of the thoughts that render us anxious, and agitated in spirit in any way comes from God, who is the Prince is Peace…” (St. Frances De Sales)

This morning while reading Searching for and Maintaining Peace (Fr. Jacques Philippe), I came across a quote from St. Frances De Sales. I find this seemingly simple and perhaps even obvious statement, so rich and compelling. These words invite me to honestly reflect on the kinds of emotions and reactions that dominate my life. Are they anxieties, fears, agitations and doubts? Or are they ones of hope, peace and trust?

I chose to write about this today because I know that I am not alone in this battle of positivity vs. negativity and ultimately of good vs. evil. We are ALL struggling, at varying degrees, with the pressure, stress and demands of “life”. It seems that now more than ever, people are crumbling under the often crippling demands to be perfect, powerful, ┬árich, put together, successful and flawless.

* God speaks to me in analogies… even if they are seats on the train hehe * ┬áThis image spoke to me of the redemption and newness that comes from God. He takes us when we feel dull, faded and used, and transforms us into something beautiful again!

Even as I write this, it seems a bit crazy and naive of us to fall into this trap. But when it’s our own lives, careers, relationships and life choices… things can become a bit blurry. We often find ourselves putting unrealistic expectations on our shoulders and fighting back feelings of failure, shame or regret when we fall short.

The good news is, we are not destined to stay in these low and often dark places. It’s not something we can just wish away, and for some of us, this journey is going to require more work and care than others, but there is always hope.

The sweet life!

As the quote above says, God is the Prince of Peace and therefore with Him comes a peace that no one can destroy. God isn’t some magician who just takes away every hardship in our lives… but he gives a different and deeper kind of peace. I think this quote says it best:

“Peace is not the absence of something, but the presence of Someone” (unknown)

I pray that all of us can enter into the deep peace that is of Christ. That we find solace and hope in He who is the Prince of Peace. Let’s pray for each other, that we can let go of the anxieties and agitations that try to hold us back from freedom, joy and peace! Perhaps a little piece of cake and tea is just the perfect place to start?!

a taste of beauty.

Wow! The weekend has a way of running away on us, hey!? Many of us are probably looking at the upcoming week plan already; appointments to attend, household tasks to finish, people to see, sorting out our lives… haha for over planners like me.

But there is still a little (or a lot depending on where your reading this in the world) weekend left! I think it’s worth enjoying. After mass today, we made our way to our favourite cake spot:

I think this was the prettiest it’s ever been! The autumn wind was cool, but not cold. The rays of sunshine were warm, but not hot. The insects were present, but not aggressive. It was truly wonderful. Plus the company I had was comparable to none! (shout out to my fantastic husband).

So I encourage you ( whoever and wherever you might be!!) to let yourself enjoy this Sunday September 8th 2019 with a little touch or taste of beauty! Perhaps it’s a special coffee you whip up at home, maybe it’s an extra trip to that gorgeous look out, maybe it’s a visit with a friend who is a source of joy and positivity in your life.

Whatever it is: enjoy your Sunday & please let me know what made your day a little bit more beautiful!

Ps. I just remembered it’s Mary’s ( like the mother of Jesus Mary hehe) birthday. Even more reason to celebrate!
